"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step on the road and if you don't keep your feet, there;s no knowing where you might be swept off to."
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings
I never knew how true that quote could be until my failed attempt to visit my cousin in Hawaii in 2015, but I am getting ahead of myself.
My name is William. For the last few years people ask me where I am going on vacation and my answer is a constant, "I don't know". I often get strange looks and so I attempt to explain myself. They don't believe me, but in reality I don't know.
If you have ever traveled on a standby airline ticket, you know the challenges of trying to get to a specific destination. It can be extremely frustrating to have a trip planned just to arrive at the airport and be met with no empty seats on your planned flight. This happened to me in 2015 when I tried to visit my cousin in Hawaii.
The result of my failed attempt to reach Hawaii spawned the fun idea of my now annual random vacation. Instead of trying to get to a specific place with a standby ticket, I just go to where ever there is an open seat.
If you don't care where you are going, you will always get there....
I love sharing my adventures with friends and family. Recently I was sharing my latest trip with some coworkers and they suggested that I should write a blog. I mulled it over during the weekend and decided, "Why not.."
Please be patient as I am new at this. I will do my best to share both my random trips as well as some planned ones. I have had some fun adventures and I hope you can enjoy them with me.
Thanks for taking the time to read.
William.
